    I am thinking of getting this but have a couple questions. 1. Does it hamper your ability to move your head while using it? 2. Do you need to remove it from your mouth to inflate or deflate the BCD? 3. Do you need to have a longer hose on your primary? (Thinking of a situation where I am deploying a DSMB while sharing air so close to my buddy)

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba Час назад

      Does not hamper moving your head. Might depend on if you customized your bcd with a shorter dump hose. Considering you are only going to use it in an emergency situation unless testing it, you will have no problem with it in your mouth. I use mine sometimes just to keep familiar with all of the use. You do not need to remove it from your mouth to inflate. Deflating might be tricky but you can pull down, opening the dump valve without removing it from your mouth. Again, if your bcd is equipped with a pull dump on your inflator hose. Most do. You do not need a longer hose on your primary. Remember, if you are giving it to a buddy in trouble, you are going to surface immediately. As all agencies train in a buddy breathing scenario, you or the buddy will hold onto each other for surfacing. I recommend practicing for your benefit giving you full confidence that it is a safe and easy process. Thanks for watching. More to come soon. Freddy

      If you already own it then go dive it. The truth is in how it works for you. Suppose to be tight. Really, many divers return suits that fit them perfectly and purchase one that doesn't fit them. More comfortable does not mean perfect fit. The goal is for the neoprene to touch your body everywhere. Sometimes the lower back can have a gap without problem. But arms, legs, thighs, chest, Butt, ankles, wrists, need to be snug. Not cut off circulation tight but snug. They will get more comfortable in the water. Promise. Thanks for watching. Freddy.

    These are fine for rec, but how many tour divers and tech divers use them? Im all for lightening the amount of pipes dangling off me but id rather not have my buddy within 6 inches of me if his air fails and he is panicking... Not claiming they don't work but the benefits don't outweigh the cost. Also it isn't the same price because your bc came with an inflator anyway and this is like $100 more expensive than a regular octo safety... A safer and better option would be to buy a decent air integrated dive computer and ditch the pressure gauge... Probably cost only a little more and you'll get a better experience with a decent computer that can calculate your air accuracy and auto add stops if needed.

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba Час назад

      I believe the benefits do outweigh the cost. We humans love our convenience. Your buddy would be the length of your primary hose, usually 30 inches. And I have to add that unless practicing, how often does the emergency situation arise where you need to buddy breathe? rarely. Definitely not the same price as an inflator. Correct they do cost more. I never mentioned they were the same price but the price to service them is included in most shops basic service fee. No extra for a secondary air source verses a standard Octo. And I heartily agree to move to air integrated computer and ditch the gauge. Thank you for watching. More to come soon. Freddy

    How does the interaction between different transmitters work? If I am using my buddies transmitter would that mean they can't connect it to their own computer as if that is the case it seems very complex and only a slight benefit. Also what is the cheapest that is available to work if I need a second to check my buddies air.

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba 13 дней назад

      The transmitters work on a specific frequency. So you input the 6 digit code into your dive computer. If another person wanted to track your transmitter and your remaining air supply, they would enter your transmitter code into their computer. You can track up to 4 different transmitters on one computer. So, you can track your air as T-1 (transmitter 1) and your buddies transmitter as T-2. Not complex at all. Very simple. Only have to input your code one time. Even if battery dies, or you change it, the computer remembers the code. Billions of frequencies so you don't get another transmitter by accident. Thanks for watching. Freddy

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba 13 дней назад

      Great question. Yes they are. But if you find one that isn't. In your save a dive kit, include a 5/32 alen wrench. That is the size of the high pressure plug in your regulator. Or you will have to take off the high pressure hose. Either way it is simple and easy. Screw your transmitter in only hand tight. Done.

    I'd say if you're thinking of strapping a knife to your leg... Just don't. It's the worst place in my experience. It is not streamlined, is an extra step when donning or doffing your exposure protection, the curvature of your leg muscles often causes the catches to bend and unlock your knife, the movement of your legs can work the knife and straps loose, and it creates a place for line to catch on your legs where otherwise it is likely to just slide off. This goes for spearfishing as well as scuba. Look at professional spearfisherman such as Daniel Mann. If leg mounting was advantageous he'd do it. Mounting on a waist strap (or anywhere except for a limb) is a better option! A trilobite or j-cutter is awesome for the vast majority of uses. I'd highly recommend them. They're cheap, extremely easy to maintain (mine doesn't seem to rust at all), super easy and safe to use, lightweight, small and easy to mount, etc. I'd say this is the best default cutter that can safely and effectively be used by anyone. Many (most?) recreational divers don't seem to carry any cutting device which is really silly given how important it is to be able to free yourself of fishing line or rope. Ideally you should actually have 2. I opted for EMS shears as my alternate because they have the ability to cut through thin wire (like heavy fishing tracers) better than a knife. Though a knife is a fair choice too. A common choice amongst DIR/technical divers is a modified serrated knife with a plastic handle (like a cheap steak knife). They cut the blade down to just a couple of inches and round off the end so that it doesn't puncture skin or drysuits. You can find pre-made ones with sheaths online.

    I just did a dive with a guy who has this infractor and his infractor leaked. He took a infractor hose off to dive. He couldn’t manually ingrate during his dive and needed to dive without BCD constantly swimming to keep up with his weight. That reminded me of how I was diving when I started my diving 1970s. Never buy a new idea until you really understand.

    Very dangerous product (not Atomics specific but all "air 2" products). Just look up on YT what real dive professionals have to say about them; and technical divers, who do the most demanding and dangerous dives wouldn't be caught dead using one of these contraptions!

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba 19 дней назад

      I completely wholeheartedly disagree. I am surrounded by dive professionals that love them. I know many true bad ass explorers, photographers, leaders in the dive world that love them. My guess is that you have not used one yet. Many of the videos I have seen on RUclips that don't like using them are embarrassing the antics and reasons why they don't like the. Example, they say it is dangerous for you to take your reg out of your mouth to give it to a buddy out of air. Hmmm, I seem to recall that every single diver certified with every single agency had to learn to remove their regulator and replace it. Think if you needed air from me. You would be at the max stress level. The best I can do for you is give the only regulator that I am 100% positive that is working, the one in my mouth. Might not be for you but to say they are dangerous is not true. I have used every version since they were invented, and I will never go back. I am a dive professional, and I would recommend this product to every single recreational diver out there. Technical diving has different needs so no, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for them. But because it is absent in their professional gear doesn't mean they believe them to be dangerous. It means that it doesn't meet their need for the type of diving they are doing. I respect opinion but be careful branding something dangerous if you are not that familiar with them. Sorry to disagree but I have to be honest here. That is what I am known for. Thanks for watching. Freddy

    The most important thing mentioned: crap is crap! Buy quality. There are way too many gimmicks for sure. I don't see a single advantage that jacket style BCDs have over a backplate and wing. Back-inflate options only have a single advantage over backplate and wing - but even then, only barely and they still have most of the downsides of the jacket BCDs! Here's why backplate and wing: they are (mostly) standardised which means that you can choose all all the best bits if you please (but simpler is better), the construction is very simple and tough - a lot less plasticity crap, two cam bands to hold a single cylinder more securely, you can easily replace any part that breaks rather than throw the whole thing out, you can keep it for your entire diving career and take it from recreational to technical (and back). You also don't get a lot of gimmicky crap on the vast majority of them (if you wear a wetsuit you don't need padding - save your cash!). You can buy a lot of the bits second hand because they wear so well, you can adjust and tune them almost infinitely and you can make them for anyone. You don't normally use a weight belt (although you can). You can easily use a hogarthian configuration and you can easily place D-rings where you need them, you can be more streamlined, you can be better trimmed. They don't squeeze you. They have a crotch-strap which keeps you more secure and allows you use use (a decent) DPV. Swap out wings to suit the type of diving you're doing... Plus more. Tech shorts or drysuit pockets are far superior to pouches on your BCD. You can access your stuff better and it's more streamlined. So it's an advantage that these don't come standard on a backplate and wing. And comparing a "technical" grade backplate and wing against a high end recreational jacket/back-inflate BCD you will find the backplate and wing cheaper initially but also cheaper over your entire diving career.

    You won't catch me with a pair of split fins ,reason the ones that I have tried , work fine at slow speed but when you are fighting for your life at max power in a rip they have no power ☠️

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba 19 дней назад

      The point of the video was to emphasize which split you try will determine your opinion. You try the Atomic split when you are fighting for your life at max power in a rip and you can't get a scuba fin with more thrust. I wouldn't want to be in that scenario in any other fin other than an Atomic split fin. Now, the Scubapro twinjet would be almost suicide to try it. They are in my opinion the worst. My guess is you tried the very popular twin jet fin. No thrust. I did a video on that fin and it rated the worst of any, yet it is sold as a split. They finally discontinued it. I am hoping I had a part to play in that decision. If you were here with me I would give you the same bet as I did the guy in the video. $100 if you are right against a chocolate donut if I was right. Try the Atomic split against your favorite scuba fin. Atomic will win. I like sprinkles on my donuts. Thanks for watching. More to come soon. Freddy

    Thanks for the really great review. Can I ask how does the screen/crystal hold up, in terms of scratches and scuffs? The reason being, the Tern uses a significantly lower quality crystal (toughened glass) than the Teric (sapphire crystal). I've read of people scratching their Tern screens quite easily, even on the very first dive. Is the screen protector on the Tern easy to replace and where would you get the replacement from?

Any Shearwater dealer can get you the screen savers. The bezel does extend a tiny bit further than the screen, so that should protect it a bit. The battery right now is the biggest thing. The Tern has been surprisingly outstanding in compared to the Teric. Lasts way longer. I will quantify that in my next extended review. Thanks for watching. Freddy

    … but you can’t back fin or frog kick properly with them. You can flutter, sure; great for being a gentle fin… but there are other directions except straight forward. RK3’s are a denser fin and are tougher to kick, I’ll agree. But they s as re super responsive and move you on a dime in any direction

    I thought your comment about having the transmitter eliminates the need for gauges was interesting. As a newer diver, I was taught that's it's always important to have a backup whether it's analog or digital.

      Great question. My friend, everyone varies on this issue. Usually, a result of a personality type issue. Please watch our video on how much gear is enough. That will answer clearly but for the sake of the answer here. I trust the gear that I purchase. Recreational diving, I don't need redundancy. Worst case scenario is that I abort a dive. But, I learned prior to computers. I can dive a watch only if necessary. Also I recognize where I am in my dive profile, timing, air consumption, etc and I can recognize if my tank is low just by my breathing. So, tricky answer is that depending on your skill level, experience, advanced training etc your comfort level will grow exponentially. Heck, i often don't even use a bcd. thanks for watching.

      It depends on what computer you use. If you have suunto , this thing loses signal every other Saturday, so you definitely want an SPG. I removed my SPG after a year of using Shearwater, and put a button gauge into 1st stage - i use it to check tank pressure on fresh cylinder, so i don't have to twinkle with computer, plus i can use it as cross check between gauge and computer, and i can always remove BCD to look at it if in real pich . But i keep SPG set in my luggage, just in case something goes wrong while I'm on vacation. In terms of procedure, if your transmitter fails, you do the same thing as if SPG fails - end the dive , go topside.

      @@amadeuss3341 I couldn't agree more. I am a Suunto dealer and they try to send me every new computer they come up with. I haven't sold a Suunto in 10 years. I actually want people to trust me. I personally haven't used a pressure gauge for recreational diving in 25 to 30 years. Please watch our video on how much gear is enough. That will answer clearly but for the sake of the answer here. Q: During the video you mentioned that the transmitter also fits in the case with the watch. Is this because you are wrapping the watch around the transmitter (vs. the supplied foam) when you store it back in the case?

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba Месяц назад

      Yeah, basically only bringing the necessary parts n pieces. I never travel with the transmitters on the regs but without the extra strap the trans fits with the computer. If I decide to use the Tern as my everyday, I actually will travel with it on my wrist as a watch. Small enough and looks fine. Thanks for participating. Freddy

      My thought is that they will be exact. Their parts for the o rings are the same one. Plus, gets extra rinsed in the shower when wearing as a watch between dive days. Thanks Paul. Freddy

    Question -- Given your experience with Shearwater Tern TX now -- and the announcement of the PEREGRINE TX this week --- (plus other experience with Teric, presume others Perdix or Peregrine), What are your thoughts for aging eyes on Peregrine TX vs Tern TX readability (given Peregrine and Peregrine TX have same display)? Why would you pick a TERN TX over a PEREGRINE TX -- or would you?

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba Месяц назад

      Awesome question and we have been discussing this exact question with our staff. First, the Peregrine, Perdix screens are for sure larger. And on bright, they are very easy to see. But, The Teric, Tern screens are higher resolution and get brighter again extremely easy to see even with my 62 year old eyes. It is going to be a personal choice for most. Any shop that sells Shearwater should have both to look at side by side. To answer your question accurately and personally, I would choose the Tern TX. My personal reason is that I will put it on before my trip and except for charging take it off when my trip is over. It is very much like a watch and performs that function. The battery so far is far outlasting the Teric. Plus the size is not a restriction for my eyes yet. If I wore the Perdix, Peregrine, I would take it off between dives or at least at the end of the dive portion of the day. Hope it helps. Freddy

      Your personal feedback is much appreciated Freddy. Love the channel too. With the new need for readers, I am still torn. Love the readability of Amoled, and the pragmatic portability of the watch style as you describe. The extra spacing between data on the Peregrine seems visually appealing. Anyone else on the trip prefer the larger display? (Albeit hard to imagine.)

    As a new diver slowly collecting gear, would you recommend the tern, tern tx, or the peregrine. The peregrine is a bit less expensive

    • @akriener
      @akriener Месяц назад

      Tern TX or Peregrine TX so you have AI. I bought a Tern TX right when it came out, because I thought that was the best value features wise for the money at the time and I needed one. I have an Apple Watch for daily wear, so having more options now I would pick the Peregrine TX solely based on the larger screen.

      See a few of the comments above to help with more information. My answer is that choose air integrated versions always. If you can't afford it yet, it won't be long because the transmitter isn't so expensive that you can't just save a bit more to get the air integrated version. As of this week, the peregrine tx just came out. Less expensive than the Tern TX. Check it out. Freddy You might also want to find our video on how to choose a dive computer. Great information and fully explains the air integration safety etc.

    I been diving since 95 and found I like both. Like most gear, I have a set of each.. usually I use stiff US Diver Blades for SCUBA- Precision and power for up to an hr. And then Tusa stiff Split fin for all day relaxing drifting snorkeling, little to no cramp, soft kicking, can wear all day.

    • @LeviathanScuba
      @LeviathanScuba Месяц назад

      Sounds like a perfect plan. Interesting that Tusa invented a foot pocket that you can buy 5 different blades to match your style of diving. Easily switched out if you want to change. They have had them since 2016 but just now adding splits, tech, stiff, pro, blades. I believe Scuba pro is coming out with something similar. We will be doing a review soon. Freddy
